"I wish to pose a few questions and topics of thought for feedback. What do you suppose encompassed the general psychology of the SS executioners? I've read numerous works (such as Ordinary Men and Becoming Eichmann, etc), but what actually makes men of average upbringing, reasonable intellect, and in some cases, positive spiritual/religious beliefs, defy and deny every moral and ethical code in their beings to commit such heinous crimes?

I've examined "brainwashing" or what is popularly now called "group thinking" but I believe this theory only goes so far. I can however, agree with the normalizing of bad behavior and bad beliefs wherein if the gross majority of people believe such things are acceptable - from the guy at the coffee shop to the woman at the fruit market - such things tend to be accepted as commonplace.

However, it seems relatively black and white for individuals. Despite teachings, propaganda and negative influences, what makes an individual of intellect and free will choose to execute men, women and children? "
