a random "Chance"...

How does a webmaster or Moderator or Site administrator know there's a dodgy or duplicate user on their forum or site?

Simple. Your internet connection has an IP Address. Sometimes this never changes, the address is "static" - that's how it is in offices, or old dial-up modems. But nowadays, when you log in via your cable network provider, you get a "Dynamic" address, one from a range of possibles....BUT the range is the same for a particular geographic location, and issued by your ISP via a named "Domain name Server" - and if you log in from the same place twice, you'll access the Internet from one of the same IP address range AND from the same domain name server...

ALL websites of ANY kind collect those two bits of information . They have to, its the law wherever you are. It's to protect decent people from spammers, hackers, trolls, etc. Mike could SEE that data and act on it....he's just constrained from giving it out. It's the same with ALL administrators or moderators or webmasters - they can USE this info for your protection, just not breach any confidences in the process.

That's how he knew Cavet25 and Crusher were the same person...

And there things rested for a whole. Every so often new faces popped up, new arguments began about "Directive 19", and ended as quickly...

But THEN - a new member on AHF made a mistake. He published a short biog of himself. His name was "Chance" his beloved dog's name...and this is what he said about himself -

"I'm 40 years old and live on the New Jersey coast. I'm happily divorced and share my home with my dog, Chance. (See photo). I work as a mental health care counselor for adolescents and hold a degree in Medieval Military History. My family has a history of military service traceable to the year 1708. My fascination with World War II Germany began during a series of interviews with an uncle who served with Reich forces. I'm a veteran of the US Army and enjoy playing and listening to music, fishing and reading. I'm also a devout Oakland Raiders fan"
